In August 21 st Koyne Program presents an immersive SCOBY workshop in collaboration with designer Mari Koppanen.

Would you like to learn how to create unique materials and explore the world of new material possibilities? Join us for an exciting SCOBY workshop where you'll delve into the art of growing bacterial cellulose, a biofilm woven by yeast and bacteria. Additionally, we will delve into the production and use of lichen pigment.

What to Expect:

The workshop begins with an introduction, where we will specifically explore the various uses and examples of fungal and bacterial-based materials. In the workshop, you will gain an understanding of the cultivation process for SCOBY and discover its potential for new applications and crafting techniques. The workshop is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in the preparation process, as well as working with pre-grown SCOBY material and lichen pigment.

Meet Your Mentor:
Leading the workshop is Ph.D. Candidate Mari Koppanen, a visionary designer who has extensive professional experience working with biomaterials, particularly fungal-based materials, in the fields of art and design. She has developed the use of SCOBY and its processing techniques for several years.
